VOL 07: ENDURANCE
Summer 2015
In volume seven, Blackbird Automotive investigates the timelessness and enduring spirit of the automobile; charting people, places and automotive craft that have stood the test of time.We begin by following British sports car racing legend and five-time 24 Hours of Le Mans champion Derek Bell, as he is reunited with his first drive after 40 years apart - a Francorchamps yellow Ferrari 512M endurance racer and the the vehicle that launched his sports car racing career. We attend Goodwood’s Festival of Speed, now in its 22nd year of running and a true all-sensory experience of everything that goes fast, before visiting master craftsman Kenji Yamada in Japan and his intricately detailed, hand-carved wood models of iconic Ferrari vehicles, a skill honed by decades of practise. We test drive the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT S and Alfa Romeo 4C; two cars inspired by the memory of their predecessors. Meeting 27 year veteran of Formula 1 photography Darren Heath and his esoteric, fine arts approach to still photography gives us his mindset on how to remain relevant and competitive through the test of time. To top it off, we showcase our coverage and thoughts about the greatest endurance race of all time - the 24 hours of Le Mans.
